Catherine Deneuve: The Muse

While “Belle de Jour” was all about Gallic beauty (starring Catherine Deneuve in Yves Saint Laurent and Roger Vivier Pilgrim pumps), Jean Aurel’s 1968 film, “Manon 70,” has the actress wearing Emanuel Ungaro with statement sunglasses, a pair of which inspired Oliver Peoples to create the new Mande frames, shown here. In a pivotal scene, Deneuve’s character, Manon, exits the airport wearing cat-eye frames just as she decides to abandon one lover for another she met right before boarding the plane. Mad for luxury — and men — she’s a free spirit who needs the perfect amber shades to hide the intention in her wide eyes, or preserve the mystery that adds to her character’s allure. Surely, the Peoples people know the type.
